Bowling Green Falcons

The Bowling Green Falcons football team has a long and storied history, dating back to 1919. The team has won 12 Mid-American Conference championships and a College Division national championship in 1959. The Falcons have also played in 13 bowl games, with a record of 5-8.

Here are some of the more notable players that buckled their chinstraps for the Bowling Green Falcons:

  • Phil Villapiano was a linebacker in the NFL for more than 20 seasons. Phil most famously played on some great Oakland Raiders teams in the 1970s as well as for the Buffalo Bills.
  • Brian McClure a QB for Bowling Green in the 1980s was drafted by the Buffalo Bills.
  • Bernie Casey played in the NFL as a WR for the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams.
  • Kory Lichtensteiger played as an interior offensive lineman most famously for the Washington Redskins and the Minnesota Vikings.

The most successful era in Bowling Green football history was under head coach Doyt Perry from 1955 to 1964. Perry led the Falcons to a record of 77-11-5, including five MAC championships and the 1959 national title.

Other notable head coaches in Bowling Green history include Don Nehlen, Urban Meyer, Dave Clawson, and Dino Babers. Nehlen led the Falcons to a MAC championship in 1975, while Meyer went 17-6 in two seasons at Bowling Green before moving on to Florida. Clawson led the Falcons to a MAC championship in 2013, and Babers led the team to a bowl game in both of his seasons at Bowling Green.
